ダウン・アンダーはオーストラリアのあだ名。
それがいつのまにかアジア大好き国家になって，2005年の貿易相手国の1位が日本(20.3%) 2位が中国(11.5%), 3位が韓国(7.9%)。アジア大好きになるのはいいもののワールドカップでアジア枠に入って来ることまでしなくてもいいのに・・・
オーストラリア出身の歌手と言えばオリビア・ニュートン・ジョンとヘレン・レディ（私は女），そして生まれはイギリスながら幼い頃にオーストラリアに移民したビー・ジーズ（マサチューセッツ，ホリディ）のギブ兄弟が有名。
彼らと比べるとメン・アット・ワークは一般的な知名度は低いが，ビルボード・トップ１００の１位になった曲が２曲（"Who Can It Be Now?""Down Under" ともに1982年)，３位が１曲("Overkill" 1983年)，６位が１曲("It's A Mistake" 1983年)と合計４曲もベスト１０以内に曲を送り込んだツワモノ達。「60年代70年代と80年代以降ではランク物に入る曲の質が違いますからねえ」という声が聞こえなくもないなが，少なくとも『ダウン・アンダー』のオーストラリアでの人気は高く1983年のワールド・カップ・アメリカ大会ではオーストラリアの非公式テーマ・ソング（並びに非公式国歌）として再リリースされた。
『ダウン・アンダー』はちょっと目，自国礼賛の国粋主義的歌に見える。しかしリード・シンガーであり作者のコリン・ヘイはこの歌は自国の資源（自然のみならず文化を含め）が欲深な者に搾取されていることを警告するために作ったということ。コーラスにある Under と韻を踏んでいる plunder （略奪する， 横領する）が彼の一番強調したい部分なのか。

【歌詞について】
『ダウン・アンダー』のプロモーション・ビデオを見ると歌詞をコミカルな味付けで忠実に再現していることがわかる。最後の棺おけを運ぶシーンは歌詞にはない。
わずかだがオーストラリア独自の単語があるので注釈をつけておく。
1 fried-out Kombi 壊れたフォルクスワーゲンのバン。語源はドイツ語の Kombinationskraftwagen「複合的利用の（ワゴン）車」。 fried-out は本来の意味は油などがフライパンを熱するために飛んでしまっている状態。そこから車や車のエンジンなどが熱でガタが来てしまっている状態を意味するようになったようだ。
2 zombie マリファナの一種
3 Vegemite ベジマイト。発酵したイースト菌に野菜やスパイスで風味をつけたスプレッドで商標。このままパンに塗るのではなくバターや溶かしたチーズとともに塗って食べるようだ。虫歯が痛むときに舐めると痛みが取れる民間療法もあるそうだ。（そう言えば見た目が毒掃丸を溶かしたみたいな感じがする）

オーストラリアの60年代のポップスで一番有名なのは日本ではザ・ピーナッツやダニー飯田とパラダイス・キングなどがカバーした『悲しきカンガルー』。原詞はかなり癖のある内容で，これを作って歌ったのがオーストラリアの漫画家でありテレビ・タレントであるロルフ・ハリス。1950年代のオーストラリアのテレビ放送の草創期にある番組でマンガの「速描き」をすることで人気が出たそうだ。
『悲しきカンガルー』は1957年彼が27歳のときに作った作品で，歌詞には人種差別的なくだりも見られる。またブラック・ユーモアに満ちた，人によっては不快感を持つであろうオチの歌。70歳を越えた今も現役で活躍中のようでウェッブ上にはこのような彼の作ったアニメがあった。
イスラム教徒を揶揄する作品もあるようでロルフ・ハリスという人は毒気のあるタレントという印象を持った。

【『悲しきカンガルー』歌詞 語注】
1 stockman (オーストラリア英語) 牧場使用人
2 me 非標準英語 これに続く名詞が無冠詞であることからここでは my の意味で考えればよいと思われる。
3 wallaby ワラビー（小形のカンガルー）
4 sport (オーストラリア英語) 男
5 cockatoo ボタンインコ
6 Abos オーストラリアの原住民・アボリジニ(Aborigine)に対する差別語。18世紀末のイギリスのオーストラリア植民地化とともに多数のアボリジニが殺害された。わずかに内陸部に生き残ったアボリジニも20世紀になって本格化した白人を社会階級の優位に置く白豪主義政策のもと保護地区に移住させられ，また子供を親元から隔離してアボリジニの文化を否定し白人文化を植えつけるなど，アボリジニは白人たちから虐げられていた。この歌のできた1950年代末はオーストラリアは白豪主義の真っ只中でこのような差別的な歌詞も公に認められていたようだ。しかし1970年代半ばからオーストラリア政府が白豪主義を撤廃し始めるとアボリジニの待遇も徐々に改善し，1993年には先住権が認められ過去没収されたアボリジニの土地が彼らの元に返還されるようになった。またこの年に地名にアボリジニの言葉と英語を併用する dual naming policy が採用され，例えば有名なエアーズ・ロックは英語名 Ayer's Rock とともにウルル（Urulu)として表記されるようになった。

It's called the De-Militarizarized Zone (DMZ) even though the place reeks of militarism. In this clip, the Korean Friendship Association, headed by Alejandro Cao De Benos, visits the DMZ on the Northern side of the ceasefire line. Upon sighting some American officers, Alejandro subjects them to his rhetorical fury, constrained only by his lackluster grasp of the English language.
